District Co-ops combine online instruction and face-to-face workshops to allow academically talented students from throughout a region or across a school district to learn together. Co-ops provide appropriate programming for academically talented students. Co-ops replace a quarter of the curriculum in the student's home school in one or more subject area.
Co-ops typically run for nine weeks and are designed to replace one hour of school each day. Students, excused from their language arts/reading class, work independently in a library or resource room setting with Internet access to complete daily tasks - responding to assignments and classmates comments online, completing research, writing papers, and reading. Many students will devote additional time in class by logging on during their free time.
District Co-op courses are run through the schools and school districts and are developed cooperatively. They are not open enrollment courses.
