Students in the middle grades look forward to this program because it offers a learning atmosphere very different from their school environment. STEP classes are designed to enrich, accelerate, and inspire. Class activities are structured to appeal to various learning styles, and long class periods give students the opportunity to concentrate on one area of interest.
Classes are small -- limited to no more than 16 students -- and intense. Students choose one class for the entire two-week period and are assessed at the end of each week. This documentation and a class portfolio provide the discussion topics for the exit interviews at the end of the program.
WCATY realizes students in the middle years need to learn about themselves as learners and as individuals. The fast pace of these classes ensures a challenge, and it is through this opportunity our students grow in understanding themselves and in appreciation of their abilities. STEP is designed to prepare students to take on the challenges of more rigorous coursework, to position themselves for highly successful high school years, and to begin the college decision process.
Most importantly, STEP is designed to help students know themselves in order to discover what they can accomplish. The program meets at Edgewood College, a small independent liberal arts college in Madison, with safe and convenient recreational and cultural opportunities within walking distance.
